Hi everyone! ?️

My name is Giorgia, and I’m an Italian exchange student currently living in Spain.
Living in as an exchange student has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life! I want to share what it’s like to explore this beautiful part of Spain and how to make the most of your free time while studying abroad.

Here, I’ll answer some of the most common questions I receive as an exchange student about how I spend my free time in Spain.

What sports or activities are available near where you live?

á徱 is known for its stunning, windy beaches, making surfing the most popular sport here. Other activities include beach volleyball, beach football, and tennis. There’s a long paseo along the sea where people walk and run, as well as a skateboard park and calisthenics area. Football is a huge deal here, and dance styles like flamenco, which originated in nearby Seville, are also widely practiced.

á徱 offers many sports facilities, including gyms and swimming pools, so there’s a great variety of options to stay active.

Have you joined any clubs or organizations?

I wouldn’t consider myself particularly sporty, so I haven’t joined any sports clubs or organizations. I did sign up for a gym for a few months, but now that the weather is nice, I prefer going for walks or runs along the sea with my friends.

Have you tried any activities since arriving?

This exchange year has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone! I tried surfing during a trip to northern Spain with other exchange students. It wasn’t exactly enjoyable, it was December, and the temperature was just 5°C but I’m glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new and exciting.

What do you do on weekends?

On weekends, I usually hang out with my Spanish friends and sometimes with other exchange students. We often meet in the city center, but now that spring has arrived and beach season has begun, we’ll probably be spending more time by the sea. Sometimes, we also organize trips to nearby cities and towns.

Have you traveled around the country?

From the very beginning, my fellow exchange students and I have been eager to explore the surroundings of á徱. We’ve visited small towns like El Puerto de Santa María, San Fernando, Jerez de la Frontera, Vejer, Setenil, Ronda, and Conil. We’ve also been to Seville multiple times, as well as Tarifa and Gibraltar.

Before coming to á徱, I attended a soft-landing camp in Barcelona, where I met all the exchange students staying in Spain. We did a lot of activities to explore the city and get to know each other, and we also received valuable advice on how to navigate our exchange year.

Later, we took another week-long trip to San Sebastián, a city in northern Spain. There, we had surfing lessons, a cooking class, scavenger hunts, and various activities to learn more about Basque culture.

In May, we’re going on our final group trip to Portugal, where we can choose between yoga and surfing as our main activities. Of course, we’ll also have time to explore the surroundings and visit cities like Lisbon.

Have you made new friends outside of school?

Most of my Spanish friends outside of school are friends of my classmates. I was lucky to have found a great group at school, and I get along well with my entire grade, so most of my friendships have formed there.

I’ve also met new people at local events, like Carnival, when everyone my age gathers to celebrate. If you sign up for a sport or activity after school, it’s a great way to meet even more Spanish friends outside of class.

Are there any special events or festivals you’ve attended?

á徱 is famous for its a nearly three-week-long celebration where people wear the most creative costumes. The festive atmosphere was absolutely magical!

In about two weeks, Semana Santa (Holy Week) will take place, which is especially significant in Andalusia. Seeing how excited my classmates are has made me look forward to experiencing it even more.

There are still so many things I want to do before my exchange ends. I’m planning a trip to Granada and óDz.

Living in Spain has been an incredible adventure, and I encourage anyone considering an exchange to go for it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will change you in ways you never expected!

Hello! ?️

My name is Ana and I spent a year on exchange in , Ireland. Today, I’m going to talk about what a typical school day looked like when I was in Ireland.

The mornings

First of all, my school started at 8:45, so I used to wake up around 7:30 to have breakfast with my host mom and talk about our plans for the day. After that, I would get dressed. In Ireland, most schools require uniforms. I used to wear a skirt, but there was also an option to wear pants, along with a shirt and a jumper. Around 8:05, I would leave home and walk to the bus stop, which was about a 5-minute walk away. The bus ride to school took around 20–25 minutes.

Irish Transition Year

My timetable was divided into three periods, each with three classes and a break in between. The second break was longer because it was lunchtime. You could either bring your own food or eat the meals provided by the school, which varied daily; for example, lasagna or chicken rolls.
I studied fourth year, which is called TY ( in Ireland. It is a non-academic year focused on trying different subjects and participating in various activities to help you discover what you might want to study in college

Subjects in school

I had Maths, English, PE, and Science during both terms, but subjects like Business, Home Economics (cooking), History, Enterprise (mini company), Chinese, Geography, Music, and Art would change between the first and second terms.

My school was an all-girls school and quite small, with just 20 girls per year – about 10 girls per class. Some people might find this boring or see it as a disadvantage, but I thought it was great because it helped everyone to have a good relationship. I could meet girls from different years, and from my point of view, it made everything much easier. I could talk to everyone and mix with them without any problems.

After school activities

School finished at 15:45, and I would walk into town, about a 25-minute walk from school, to meet up with friends for a coffee or go to the gym.

I usually had most afternoons free because we didn’t have many tests during the terms – just a few at the end of each term. Around 7:30 p.m., I would take the bus home and have dinner with my host family, which was my favorite part of the day. We would talk about how our days had been, and we never ran out of conversation. It was the best!

Homework important for evaluation

Every day, teachers gave us homework, which is very important to them – sometimes even more important than tests. As you can see, the academic system is different from Spain or other countries. The biggest difference might be that in Ireland, school is much more relaxed. They prefer to evaluate students through projects and homework rather than tests, which I found easier because it gave me more free time in the afternoons.

After dinner, I would do my homework and then spend some time with my host family before going to bed.

Nowadays, when I look back, I realize how much I enjoyed my days in Ireland, all the experiences I had, and the life lessons I learned. It definitely was the best experience of my life!

Hi everyone! ?️

My name is Irene, and I’m currently spending my 11th-grade year (spring 2025) on , Canada. School, friends, and new experiences are all important parts of a great exchange year. But for me, one of the most meaningful aspects has been the host family and the bond you build with them.

I live close to the school

I feel incredibly lucky with my host family! My host family consists of four members: my host mom, my host dad, my host brother, and my host sister. Oh, and we also have two adorable cats who make our home even cozier!

We live in a charming house near downtown on Vancouver Island. It’s a beautiful area full of parks, waterfront trails, and even a Tim Hortons just around the corner! My school, Nanaimo District Secondary School, is only a five-minute drive away.

I have my own room here, and it’s even bigger than my bedroom back home in Spain! I sleep in a queen-size bed and have a huge wardrobe. My host siblings and I have our rooms in the basement, which is pretty common in Canadian homes, and super convenient, especially during the snowy season.

A typical school day for me

On a typical school day, I wake up, get ready, and have breakfast with my host siblings. Then, our host mom drives us to school. We usually all gather again for dinner, where we enjoy one of the delicious meals she cooks. About once a month, we treat ourselves to a night out or order some food in!

At first, the hardest thing for me was adjusting to the food. Even though my host mom is an amazing cook, Canadian meals felt very different compared to the simple, flavorful dishes I’m used to in Spain. But over time, I’ve adapted – and now I love trying new flavors!

Weekends here are full of activities

Weekends are always full of fun adventures. We often visit nearby towns, head to the beach or river, or even take the ferry to – especially if there’s a lacrosse game on! We also enjoy BBQ dinners with friends and family. My host family loves the outdoors, so when the weather is nice, we go hiking or camping. One of my favorite activities has been skiing on during the long Canadian winter – it lasts almost five months!

Amazing experience

This experience of getting to know a new family and embracing a different way of life has been truly amazing. I feel so grateful and happy to be here.

Thanks for reading, and I hope your exchange experience will be just as wonderful! ?

Joining a sports team is a big part of high school. As an exchange student it is your chance to practice your favorite sport or just try something new, no matter what level you are on or what your interests are you can be sure that you will find something for you!

Listicle – 11 high school sports

Basketball

Some of the most famous athletes in America all got their start in high school, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant to name a few. Joining a high school basketball team is a great way to be part of a group, practice teamwork, improve work ethic and discipline. And with women’s basketball on the rise it is definitely one of the most popular sports among high schools in the USA.

American football

Do you have a dream of one day playing in the ? American football has long been a symbol as the ultimate American sport, it is played at almost every school in every state and many players go on to play at a college level after they graduate and might even join the NFL later on.

Cheerleading

High school cheerleading could be described as a combination between dance and gymnastics, it requires strength and flexibility and not to be afraid of falling down. Depending on the team it could be good to know that they often travel to different states for competitions, so make sure that you are able to leave for short periods of time a few times a month during competition season.

Volleyball

The perfect summer sport! Volleyball comes in many different variations, you can play it inside or at the beach on a sunny day! High school volleyball is more common in the warmer states as many prefer to play outside, but it’s starting to become more popular in the rest of the country as well.

Hockey

Hockey is a fast-paced and exciting sport offered in two main forms: ice hockey and field hockey. Ice hockey is played on ice with skates and a puck, while field hockey is played on turf with a ball. Both versions bring energy, teamwork, and plenty of action to the game – no matter which one your high school offers.

Gymnastics

Do you want to be the next Simone Biles? Do you have coordination, strength and balance? Then maybe gymnastics is for you. Just like any other sport there are several different variations, most high schools offer both rhythmic (performance, dance and flow) and artistic gymnastics (technicality and balance) so that you can specialize in the one that you like the best!

Track & Field

If you have good stamina and like running or jumping in fast paced competitions, then consider joining your high school track & field team! Track & Field consists of 7 different athletic contests: 100 metres hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 metres, long jump, javelin throw and 800 metres.

Swimming

Swimming is a perfect sport if you want a full body workout. Many high schools in the USA have their own swimming pool at school grounds, so there is no need to leave school to go to practice. If you like watersports but not competitive swimming, you could always see if your school has a diving team instead!

Baseball

With almost high school baseball teams all across the states, it is one of the more popular sports in the USA. Baseball and softball are very similar with only a few minor differences that separate them, the majority of schools in the USA offer at least one of them.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse might not be as popular outside of the USA, but if you haven’t heard about Lacrosse earlier, it’s almost like a mix between hockey and handball where you catch the ball with a net. The sport used to be more common in just New York but has recently gained more popularity across the states in the recent years especially among women where participation in the sport has the last 5 years.

Soccer

Soccer might be the biggest sport in the world but in the US it is just now starting to get popular, especially with the 2026 FIFA world cup being held in the US, .

What makes soccer so appealing is its simplicity, it is a game that can be played anywhere in any weather.

So if your school doesn’t have a team, you can always gather your friends, find a soccer ball and create your own!

? Study in the USA – pick your high school sport

Curious about studying at an U.S. high school and playing sports at the same time? 17Թ has an extensive partnership with schools across the USA, and many of them offer a variety of sports for you as an exchange student. With our school matcher, you can easily search by state and see which sports are available!

]]>

You have probably heard of the IB Programme or the IB Diploma in various contexts. In this article, we will go through some of the most common questions.

What is the IB Diploma Programme?

To start with, the IB Diploma is designed for high school students (aged 16 to 19) and the acronym IB stands for International Baccalaureate. The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year high school curriculum that follows an international standard and is offered in English, Spanish, and French. It is administered by the Switzerland-based International Baccalaureate foundation (). The main objective of the program is to provide students with the best possible preparation for university studies.

Which subjects can I take in the IB DP?

Students select one subject from each of the following six subject groups:

 • Studies in Language and Literature (e.g., Language A, Literature, and Performance)
 • Sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Design Technology)
 • Language Acquisition (e.g., Classical Languages, Language B)
 • Individuals and Societies (e.g., Business Management, Economics, History)
 • Mathematics (e.g., Analysis and Approaches, Applications and Interpretation)
 • Arts (e.g., Dance, Film)

In addition to these subjects, students must complete the DP Core, which consists of:

 • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – A course focusing on critical thinking and the nature of knowledge.
 • Extended Essay (EE) – An independent research paper.
 • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) – A component designed to encourage engagement in extracurricular and community activities.

How are you evaluated?

Assessment consists of both internal evaluations by teachers and external assessments by IB examiners. Some examples of evaluated components include multiple-choice and extended-response questions, extended essays, written assignments, tasks, and scientific explorations and fieldwork.

The IB organization explains its grading process as follows:

“In the IB, marking and grading student work are two different actions. When work is marked, you are given credit for the work you have produced against a mark scheme or similar framework. Marks show how much of the assessment task you got right. The mark itself has no other meaning. In deciding a grade, the examiner is making a judgment on the quality of your work against a defined standard. This takes into account the difficulty of the task as well as the number of marks given. Grades have a particular meaning and relevance, and they are intended to be comparable with grades in other subjects.”

Can you fail an exam and still receive the Diploma?

Yes, it is possible. If you or your school believe that your results do not accurately reflect your knowledge, you may have options to retake exams or request a remark.

What are the benefits of the International Baccalaureate Diploma?

Like other IB programs, the IB Diploma Programme aims to develop critical thinking skills and the ability to handle complex problems. Each year, around 4,500 universities in 110 countries admit IB students. If you are curious about which universities accept IB applicants, you can explore this .

Some well-known universities in the United States that recognize the IB Diploma (or IB DP, commonly used by IB students) include:

 • Cornell University
 • Harvard University
 • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
 • Princeton University
 • Stanford University

Which schools offer the Diploma?

There are nearly 5,800 schools in 162 countries that offer various IB programs, and approximately 3,000 of these schools provide the IB Diploma Programme. You can find all IB schools on the . If you are curious on the student IB experience, read this blog post.

At 17Թ, we collaborate with many high schools that offer the IB Diploma, including schools in the USA. Find your dream IB school here. Among the most popular schools for the IB Diploma among our international students are:

Schools focusing on STEM

Studying high school abroad offers so many possibilities! Why not focus on a subject you love while improving your language and living in a new country? One of the most popular choices is an exchange program where you can study at a top school focusing on STEM. But what does STEM education mean? And why exactly is a STEM education so important during your high school years?

What is STEM education? Let’s break it down!

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

 • Science includes disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science.
 • Technology refers to the machines, and systems used to solve problems or complete tasks. Think computer science, information technology and robotics competitions with your classmates to show off your skills.
 • Engineering involves constructing things like bridges, buildings, and even space rockets. It comes in various branches, like civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
 • Mathematics is the language of numbers. It helps understand patterns, applicable in fields like calculus, algebra, statistics, and geometry.

But STEM is more than learning these subjects separately. It’s about bringing them together to solve real-world problems. Imagine tackling climate change. You’d need biologists to understand the environment, engineers to develop solutions and new technologies, and mathematicians to crunch the numbers.

Understanding the Cross-Cultural Code

So, what precisely is cross-cultural fluency? It is the proficiency to comprehend, communicate, and collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. It goes beyond merely speaking a common language; it’s about grasping their cultural nuances, understanding their customs, and navigating their world with finesse.

Navigating Cultural Norms

Cross-cultural fluency involves recognizing how different cultures naturally express themselves and interact. Are they straightforward or subtle in their communication? Are they expressive or reserved? Do they prioritize hierarchy or group decision-making? Understanding these nuances is akin to possessing the key to smoother interactions. It all starts with gaining insight into the characteristics of your own culture.

Why It Matters!

While we all share our humanity, even minor cultural differences can significantly impact our daily lives. Whether you’re meeting your host family for the first time during an exchange program, conversing with a new friend from a different country, or pursuing your dream international job, these differences matter.

Turbocharge Your Career in a Competitive Job Market

A survey of employers revealed that 25% considered international experience a top hiring priority (QS study, Employer Insights Report 2020). Another report, IIE’s “The Impact of Study Abroad on 21st Century Skills & Career Prospects in the United States,” indicated that more than half of the respondents believed their study abroad experience contributed to a job offer.

Ready to become the ultimate cross-cultural expert?
Here’s your roadmap:

Immerse Yourself: Engage with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Be curious about their histories, experiences, and worldview.
